Egyptian protesters clash with police, 1 dead (AP)

CAIRO ? Egyptian security forces clashed with protesters camped outside the Cabinet building Saturday, leaving one man dead, as tensions rose two days ahead of parliamentary elections being held despite mass demonstrations against military rule.

The violence occurred as a wave of protests against military rule was given extra impetus by the Egyptian military's decision on Friday to appoint a prime minister who served under deposed President Hosni Mubarak.

The Obama administration has increased pressure on Egypt's military rulers, who took over from Mubarak, to transfer power to civilian leaders throwing its support behind tens of thousands of protesters massed on Cairo's central Tahrir for more than a week.

Hundreds also had gathered outside the Cabinet building, a few blocks away, to prevent newly appointed Prime Minister Kamal el-Ganzouri from entering to take up his new post. They clashed with security forces who allegedly tried to disperse them.

An Associated Press cameraman saw three police troop carriers and an armored vehicle firing tear gas as they were being chased from the site by rock-throwing protesters.

The man who was killed was run over by one of the vehicles, but there were conflicting accounts about the circumstances surrounding the death.

The Interior Ministry expressed regret for the death of the protester, identified as Ahmed Serour, and said it was an accident.

Police didn't intend to storm the sit-in but were merely heading to the Interior Ministry headquarters, located behind the Cabinet building, when they came under attack by angry protesters throwing firebombs, it said in a statement. The ministry claimed security forces were injured and the driver of one of the vehicles panicked and ran over the protester.

One of the protesters, Mohammed Zaghloul, 21, said he saw six security vehicles heading to their site.

"It became very tense, rock throwing started and the police cars were driving like crazy," he said. "Police threw one tear gas canister and all of a sudden we saw our people carrying the body of a man who was bleeding really badly."

Video clips posted on social networking sites also showed protesters rushing to rescue a heavily bleeding man they said was killed when a police vehicle ran over him.

Officials say more than 40 people have been killed across the country since Nov. 19, when the unrest began after a small sit-in by protesters injured during the 18-day uprising that ousted Mubarak was violently broken up by security forces. That led to days of clashes, which ended with a truce on Thursday. It wasn't clear if the melee on Saturday was an isolated incident or part of new violence by security forces trying to clear the way for the new prime minister, and protesters frustrated by what they believe are the military's efforts to perpetuate the old regime.

The military's appointment of el-Ganzouri, its apology for the death of protesters and a series of partial concessions in the past two days suggest that the generals are struggling to overcome the most serious challenge to their nine-month rule, with fewer options now available to them.

The latest crisis has overshadowed Monday's start of Egypt's first parliamentary elections since Mubarak was replaced by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi. The vote, which the generals say will be held on schedule despite the unrest, is now seen by many activists and protesters to be serving the military's efforts to project an image of itself as the nation's saviors and true democrats.

The next parliament is expected to be dominated by the country's most organized Muslim Brotherhood group, who decided to boycott the ongoing protests to keep from doing anything that could derail the election. However, the outcome of the vote is likely to be seen as flawed given the growing unrest and the suspension by many candidates of their campaigns in solidarity with the protesters.

(AP) ? Three American students arrested during a protest in Cairo caught flights out of Egypt early Saturday, according to an airport official and an attorney for one of the trio.

The three Americans were arrested on the roof of a university building near Cairo's Tahrir Square last Sunday. Officials accused them of throwing firebombs at security forces fighting with protesters.

Luke Gates, 21, and Derrik Sweeney, 19, left the Egyptian capital Saturday on separate flights to Frankfurt, Germany, an airport official in Cairo said. Gregory Porter, 19, also left the country, his attorney said.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

An Egyptian court ordered the release of Gates, Porter and Sweeney on Thursday. All were studying at the American University in Cairo.

Attorney Theodore Simon, who represents Porter, a student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, said police escorted the three students to the Cairo airport Friday. Simon later said his client was on a flight.

"I am pleased and thankful to report that Gregory Porter is in the air. He has departed Egyptian airspace and is on his way home," Simon said, though he declined to say when Porter was expected back in the U.S.

Simon said he and Porter's mother both spoke by phone with the student, who is from the Philadelphia suburb of Glenside.

"He clearly conveyed to me ... that he was OK," Simon told The Associated Press.

Gates is a student at Indiana University. It wasn't clear when he was expected back in the U.S.

Joy Sweeney told the AP her son, a 19-year-old Georgetown University student from Jefferson City, Missouri, would fly from Frankfurt to Washington, then on to St. Louis. She said family will meet him when he arrives late Saturday.

"I am ecstatic," Sweeney said Friday. "I can't wait for him to get home tomorrow night. I can't believe he's actually going to get on a plane. It is so wonderful."

Sweeney said she had talked with her son Friday afternoon and "he seemed jubilant."

"He thought he was going to be able to go back to his dorm room and get his stuff," she said. "We said, 'No, no, don't get your stuff, we just want you here.'"

She said the American University in Cairo will ship his belongings home.

Sweeney had earlier said she did not prepare a Thanksgiving celebration this week because the idea seemed "absolutely irrelevant" while her son still was being held.

"I'm getting ready to head out and buy turkey and stuffing and all the good fixings so that we can make a good Thanksgiving dinner," she said Friday.

UN report: North Korean harvest improves (AP)

ROME ? U.N. food agencies say that North Korea's main harvest has improved but warn that malnutrition persists.

The report published Friday by two Rome-based agencies, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Program, says harvests are expected to increase by about 8.5 percent compared to last year's.

The U.N. assessment team says hospital staff report a "significant" increase in malnutrition among young children. Diets lacking in protein or nutrient rich foods are blamed.

The report says nearly 3 million people will continue to require food assistance next year. U.N. officials have appealed to wealthy countries to put aside politics to help hungry North Koreans. There have been concerns about whether Pyongyang's authoritarian government diverts food aid.

Court hears Nature libel case

A scientist has told the High Court that an article criticising him was "scandalous" and had nothing to do with freedom of expression.

Professor Mohamed El Naschie is suing the Nature journal for libel and says the claims in the article are "despicable and defamatory".

The barrister representing Nature said the article, published in 2008, was true and in the public interest.

Judgment on the case will be reserved and is set to be announced in January.

In November 2008, Nature published an article which alleged that Prof El Naschie self-published many papers and that some did not seem to have been independently checked by scientists working in the same area - a process known as peer review.

The article also alleged that five of the 36 papers in the December edition of Prof El Naschie's publication - Chaos, Solitons and Fractals - were written by him and 60 self-penned articles had been published since the beginning of the year.

Prof El Naschie, who was representing himself, used his opening statement to tell the court that publishing in one's own journal was not something that was unheard of.

He said that he would discuss his papers with fellow scientists, and only when he thought that they were of a sufficiently high standard would he publish them.

"I am too arrogant and have too much self-respect to allow a bad paper to pass through," he said.

Prof El Naschie called one witness, Prof Otto Rossler - an honorary editor of Chaos, Solitons and Fractals.

He told the court that there was no-one who could peer review him, referring to Prof El Naschie, because "if you have something new to offer, peer review is dangerous", adding that in such cases "peer review delays progress in science".

Prof El-Naschie asked his witness whether he thought that his (Prof El Naschie) papers were of "poor quality".

Prof Rossler replied: "On the contrary, they were very important and will become more important in the future."

And he added: "You are the most hard-working and diligent scientists I have ever met."

Last week, Nature provided testimony from three of its expert witnesses that the procedures used by Prof El Naschie's journal for the selection of papers did not appear to follow the normal practice of peer review.

The case continues next week, and the judgment on the case will be reserved and is expected to be announced early in the New Year.

End of the Packers' streak?

nfl_g_leonlett_200Getty Images

It?s hardly hyperbolic to claim that this year?s trio of Thursday games represents the best Thanksgiving slate the NFL ever has offered.

Thanks to the decision as of 2006 to add a nightcap on NFL Network and the more recent commitment to sacrifice games with great Sunday-Monday primetime potential for a captive audience that would tune in for Panthers-Colts, the chances for getting great games on Thanksgiving generally have increased.

This year, we have two potentially great ones and one that has dramatically improved in perception since Halloween.? And so Rosenthal and I decided to pick the Thursday three-pack separately.? Though the outcome will count in the year-to-date standings, the winner of tomorrow?s contest gets special recognition.

Especially since it?s the only chance I have to get any recognition this year when it comes to picking games.

Packers at Lions

Florio?s take:? The Lions like to fall behind and then come back.? The Packers have the type of defense that allows that to happen.? But the Green Bay offense is good enough to hold off the charge.? Get your popcorn ready.? And your calculators.

Florio?s pick:? Packers 48, Lions 42.

Rosenthal?s take: The Packers are great, but not 16-0 great. Detroit gives them matchup problems because they get after the quarterback and defend the pass well. ?Detroit dominated the Packers up front last year. The Lions? weak run defense won?t matter because the Packers won?t test them. It?s going to be a happy Thanksgiving in the Motor City.

Rosenthal?s pick: Lions 34, Packers 31.

Dolphins at Cowboys

Florio?s take:? Not long ago, this looked like a game that not even an inch of sleet and a cameo from Leon Lett could make interesting.? With the two teams on a combined six-game winning streak and the Cowboys in first place in the NFC East, this could be a surprisingly good one.

Florio?s pick:? Cowboys 28, Dolphins 24.

Rosenthal?s take: The Dolphins aren?t your average 3-7 team. They have won the last three games by a combined score of 86-20. Matt Moore is playing at a very high level and can exact some revenge on the Cowboys for cutting him in 2007. The Cowboys aren?t an average 6-4 team either. They could be the most balanced squad in the NFC.

Rosenthal?s pick: Cowboys 27, Dolphins 24.

49ers at Ravens

Florio?s take:? 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh knows how to get the most out of his team.? He also knows how to get the best of his brother.? Look for both to happen on Thursday night.? John Harbaugh is a very good coach, but Jim already is a great one.? And that will be the difference.

Florio?s pick:? 49ers 17, Ravens 10.

Rosenthal?s take:? The more I watch the Ravens, the less impressed I am. The defense gives up too many big plays and can get pushed around up front. The offense is erratic drive-to-drive. San Francisco has the tougher front seven and running game. The 49ers are the team we all thought the Ravens were.

Rosenthal?s pick:? 49ers 17, Ravens 14.

Sky+ app gets Series Links just in time for them to become irrelevant

Demanding American consumers make sure that if a DVR app doesn't ship with global Spotify support or HDD-management capabilities, it's kicked to the kerb. Demure UK consumers command less respect -- we're happy if our software does anything useful at all. That's why Sky hasn't rushed in updating its Sky+ app for iOS and Android, but in December it'll finally enable users to add Series Links (like Season Passes, only shorter and with fewer filler episodes) at the push of a touchscreen. Sadly you don't get the option to stream from your home box, so don't uninstall that Sky Go app if you're looking for a profanity-laden dose of Deadwood at the grocery store.

Ca. college president vows pepper spraying probe (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? The president of the University of California system said he was "appalled" at images of protesters being doused with pepper spray and plans an assessment of law enforcement procedures on all 10 campuses, as two police officers were placed on administrative leave in the incident that's reverberating around the nation.

"Free speech is part of the DNA of this university, and non-violent protest has long been central to our history," UC President Mark G. Yudof said in a statement Sunday in response to the spraying of students sitting passively at UC Davis. "It is a value we must protect with vigilance."

Yudof said it was not his intention to "micromanage our campus police forces," but he said all 10 chancellors would convene soon for a discussion "about how to ensure proportional law enforcement response to non-violent protest."

Protesters from Occupy Sacramento planned to travel to nearby Davis on Monday for a noon rally in solidarity with the students, the group said in a statement.

UC Davis officials refused to identify the two officers who were place on administrative leave but one was a veteran of many years on the force and the other "fairly new" to the department, the school's Police Chief Annette Spicuzza told The Associated Press. She would not elaborate further because of the pending probe.

Videos posted online of the incident clearly show one riot-gear clad officer dousing the line of protesters with spray as they sit with their arms intertwined. Spicuzza told the AP that the second officer was identified during an intense review of several videos.

"We really wanted to be diligent in our research, and during our viewing of multiple videos we discovered the second officer," Spicuzza said. "This is the right thing to do."

Both officers were trained in the use of pepper spray as department policy dictates, and both had been sprayed with it themselves during training, the chief noted.

Meanwhile, UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi said she has been inundated with reaction from alumni, students and faculty and would speed up an investigation that was to have taken three months.

"I spoke with students this weekend and I feel their outrage," Katehi said in a statement Sunday.

Katehi also set a 30-day deadline for her school's task force investigating the incident to issue its report. The task force, comprised of students, staff and faculty, will be chosen this week. She earlier had set a 90-day timetable.

She also plans to meet with demonstrators Monday at their general assembly, said her spokeswoman, Claudia Morain.

The UC Davis faculty association called for Katehi's resignation, saying in a Saturday letter there had been a "gross failure of leadership." Katehi has resisted calls for her to quit.

"I am deeply saddened that this happened on our campus, and as chancellor, I take full responsibility for the incident," Katehi said Sunday. "However, I pledge to take the actions needed to ensure that this does not happen again. I feel very sorry for the harm our students were subjected to and I vow to work tirelessly to make the campus a more welcoming and safe place."

The incident reverberated well beyond the university, with condemnations and defenses of police from elected officials and from the wider public on Facebook and Twitter.

"On its face, this is an outrageous action for police to methodically pepper spray passive demonstrators who were exercising their right to peacefully protest at UC Davis," Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, said in a statement Sunday. "Chancellor Katehi needs to immediately investigate, publically explain how this could happen and ensure that those responsible are held accountable."

The protest Friday was held in support of the overall Occupy Wall Street movement and in solidarity with protesters at the University of California, Berkeley who were jabbed by police with batons on Nov. 9.

Nine students hit by pepper spray were treated at the scene, two were taken to hospitals and later released, university officials said. Ten people were arrested.

Meanwhile Sunday, police in San Francisco, about 80 miles south of Davis, arrested six anti-Wall Street protesters and cleared about 12 tents erected in front of the Federal Reserve Bank.

Across the bay in Oakland, police made no arrests after protesters peacefully left a new encampment set up in defiance of city orders.

BC-US--Rethinking Abuse, 1st Ld-Writethru ,852Penn State sex case rivets public, fuels reformsEds: Adds details, quotes.By MARYCLAIRE DALEAssociated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Jerry Sandusky's brief call to a TV sportscaster may have done more to raise concern over child-sex crimes than three decades of church-abuse cases.

Sandusky, 67, quickly denied being a pedophile when Bob Costas asked him.

But Penn State's retired defensive coordinator paused, and rambled, when asked whether he's sexually attracted to children.

"He doesn't want to label himself what he is," said former Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham, who once led a grand jury investigation into the Philadelphia archdiocese and is working with the charity Sandusky founded to conduct an internal investigation. "This is a pattern of conduct that is so classic in its context: the grooming, the young boys, the gifts, the flattery, the meals, the trips, the jock thing, the touching."

The allegations against Sandusky have toppled iconic coach Joe Paterno and the university's president and riveted the public in the two weeks since his arrest. People are poring over the grand jury report and asking why it took years for witness accounts and police investigations to surface.

Sandusky was charged with abusing eight boys over 15 years, sometimes on campus. He vows to fight the 40-count indictment.

"There are far more numbers (of victims and abusers) in the priest-abuse scandal, and one might even think larger violations of trust," said Frank Cervone, executive director of the Support Center for Child Advocates in Philadelphia. "Ironically, more people are upset (now)."

The 2002 case of one abusive priest in the Archdiocese of Boston led to years of revelations that bishops across the U.S. had for decades moved accused priests among churches without alerting parents or police.

The Penn State case may give more political muscle to those trying to get victims more time to file criminal complaints or lawsuits against the church. Sandusky assaulted some of his boys more than a decade ago, the grand jury said. More accusers have contacted police or lawyers this month, after learning about the report or Sandusky's denials.

"This drives home the point; this is not a Catholic issue. It never has been. It's a kids' issue," said John Salveson, president of the Pennsylvania-based Foundation to Abolish Child Sex Abuse, which supports laws to extend legal time limits. "Whether Penn State, whether the Boy Scouts, whether it's the Catholic church, it's not about those institutions. I think people are starting to see the difference."

Historically, the Catholic church has fought such legislation in Pennsylvania, Colorado and other states, as the hierarchy struggled with abuse claims that have bankrupt some dioceses.

Philadelphia's new archbishop, Charles Chaput, arrived this fall from Denver, where he had publicly apologized to victims and tried to quickly settle litigation. The Denver archdiocese settled 43 claims for a total of $8.3 million from 2005 to 2008 under his watch.

Chaput arrived in Philadelphia in the midst of an unprecedented criminal priest--abuse case. Three priests are charged with raping boys while a former high-ranking diocesan official faces child endangerment charges stemming from accusations that he transferred predators to new parishes.

But because of the statute of limitations in Pennsylvania, the archdiocese has not spent millions of dollars on civil suits. Abraham's grand jury concluded in 2005 that 63 priests had been credibly accused, but the cases were all too old to prosecute or pursue through lawsuits.

Lawmakers that year extended the age limit to file civil suits to age 30, from age 20, but the change was not retroactive. Advocates now want to extend the limit to age 50, and give victims a two-year window to file civil suits after reporting abuse.

The archdiocese said Friday it would need to carefully review such legislation.

"Any legislation needs to be carefully considered, and we believe immediate reporting of alleged child abuse, and clarity on how a report is to be made and by whom, is critical," it said in a statement.

The church vowed to support "legislation that is fair and just for all involved ... as private and public institutions in this state work together to protect children."

The Pennsylvania Catholic Conference, along with Chaput's predecessors in Philadelphia, vigorously fought time extensions in the past.

"The worst thing he can do is continue the policies of the previous administration," Abraham said.

Now in private practice, she has been retained by The Second Mile, the charity Sandusky founded for disadvantaged youth, to conduct an internal investigation of who knew what. Sandusky met the boys he's accused of molesting through the group, which runs camps, trips and other activities for children in several counties.

Even in her new role, she continues to support the time extensions for filing civil suits.

"To convince witnesses to come forward, and tell these horrible secrets, it's very difficult," Abraham said.

At a news conference Tuesday in support of the victim bills, 78-year-old state lawmaker Louise Williams Bishop stunned colleagues as she painfully revealed that she had been raped as a child.

"People are beginning to understand why it's so hard to disclose, that if you've been victimized, sometimes the embarrassment, the shame keeps you quiet," Cervone said. "(There's) the fear that disclosure will be worse than the crime."
