Sleep Could Help People Get Over Fear Of Spiders: Study

Trying to get over a fear of spiders? New research study suggests sleep could help facilitate the process.

A new, small study in the Journal of Psychiatric Research shows that sleeping after exposure therapy for spider phobia seems to make the therapy more effective, the Harvard Gazette reported.

The study included 66 women who all watched this video of a spider 14 times. The women were randomly assigned to different groups to watch the video every two hours or every 12 hours, and either in the morning or evening, or after spending a night sleeping or a full day awake. The researchers also measured the study participants' palm sweat when they sounded off a loud noise during some of the videos.

The researchers found that the women who managed to get a night's rest after watching the spider videos, before being shown the spiders again, were also less likely to rate the spider high on a scale of "fearfulness, disgust, and unpleasantness," the Harvard Gazette reported. Meanwhile, those who stayed up for 12 hours after watching the spider videos and were then shown the videos again at the end of the day had a stronger stress response to the spiders.

Researchers, however, didn't find a difference in reaction to the spiders between those who watched the videos in the morning or the evening.

"Thus, sleep following exposure therapy may promote retention and generalization of extinction learning," the researchers wrote in the study.

The researchers noted that REM sleep in particular could be responsible for the effect.

Recently, a Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences study showed that severely arachnophobic adults who underwent just one session of therapy experienced brain changes that resulted in them being able to hold a tarantula in their hands -- and the effect lasted six months after the therapy session.

"Before treatment, some of these participants wouldn't walk on grass for fear of spiders or would stay out of their home or dorm room for days if they thought a spider was present," study researcher Katherina Hauner, post-doctoral fellow in neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, said in a statement.

"But after a two or three-hour treatment, they were able to walk right up and touch or hold a tarantula. And they could still touch it after six months," Hauner said.

However you do it, though, it may be better for your health to get over your phobias. A recent study from Brigham and Women's Hospital researchers found that having a phobic anxiety -- which includes fear of spiders, as well as social phobias -- can make you age faster biologically.

Opponents to Approved N.Y.U. Expansion Plan Tossed out of City ...

By Paul Bisceglio

?Chin and Quinn did us in!? jeered over 50 opponents to New York University?s expansion plan from a balcony overlooking City Council?s chamber. ?Shame on you!?

Greenwich Village residents, community activists and N.Y.U. professors filled the chamber to capacity yesterday to witness the full City Council?s final vote to approve hotly debated zoning and map changes that will allow the university to construct four new high-rise buildings over the course of 17 years, 2014 to 2031.

The opponents became increasingly vocal as the time to vote neared, and broke into chants just before it. Speaker Christie Quinn asked for silence and warned the opponents that they would be kicked out, but the chants continued, and security escorted the entire balcony out of the building.

The proposal passed by a 44-to-1 vote.

Prior to the meeting, the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation (GVSHP) commissioned a 32-page report that outlined the negative impacts of the expansion plan, and opponents wrote a letter to City Council that expressed the community?s dissatisfaction with the proposal.

?The NYU expansion plan will turn a residential neighborhood into a company town and subject it to twenty straight years of construction,? said GVSHP Executive Director Andrew Berman in a statement.? ?The Council ignored the grave environmental impacts of this plan and the much better options that had been put forward for NYU to locate new facilities in the Financial District; this is a sad day for democracy in New York City.?

John Sexton, N.Y.U.?s president, however, said that the approval marked ?a great day for N.Y.U. and for New York City,? and said that the expansion will provide the city with much-needed construction jobs and university positions.

His statement argued that the plan ?strikes an important balance: permitting N.Y.U. to maintain academic excellence by meeting our educational- and research-space needs on our existing footprint over the next two decades, while at the same time addressing the concerns of our neighbors on such issues as improving access to open space.?

The opponents are now considering legal action. ?We will be working closely with our partners in the NYU faculty and with our lawyers at Gibson Dunn to pursue every avenue available to us to remedy this tragic wrong which has been imposed upon the people of the City of New York,? said Berman.

Junior Seau Home: Linebacker's Home Listed For $2.3 Million

OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- The beachfront home where former NFL linebacker Junior Seau killed himself is on the market for nearly $2.3 million.

The price is significantly less than the $3.2 million Seau paid for the home in 2005.

Seau, a former San Diego Chargers linebacker, was 43 when he shot himself at the home in May. By law, the seller must disclose that a suicide occurred on the property.

The Ice House is excited to welcome the return of Comedy Central star and audience favorite BRAD WILLIAMS on August 10 and 11.

Comedian BRAD WILLIAMS has lived a true comic Cinderella story. Born with Achondroplastic dwarfism, Brad would endure countless taunts and gawks from classmates and random people on the street. Instead of crying about it, Brad turned to humor. He has appeared on numerous TV shows including Mind Of Mencia, Live at Gotham, the Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live and Pitboss. Brad has also performed for the troops all over the world.

Brad was born and raised in Orange County, CA. He dropped out of college and started doing comedy at the age of 19. He toured as Carlos Mencia?s opening act for 5 years. Brad?s big break came when he would appear in numerous sketches on Comedy Central?s Mind Of Mencia TV show. Brad?s memorable roles on the show include playing a whore dwarf (?whorf?), the leader of an all dwarf basketball team, joining Mencia at a Renaissance faire, and giving a speech about his hatred of podiums.

Brad?s show is high energy. Robin Williams called him ?Prozac with a head.? Brad?s ability to make humorous observations on disability, relationships, sex, and race are winning over audiences and proving that anyone can overcome their shortcomings.

Brad Williams will perform four (4) shows on August 10 & 11. The complete show schedule for August 2 through12 is listed below:

Romney Camp Continues 'You Didn't Build That' Attacks with Swing State Events

Mitt Romney may be overseas, but his campaign is definitely not taking a pause, holding 24 events across 12 battleground states Wednesday all trying to take advantage of comments the president made last week.

The Romney campaign has been heavily pressing their "you didn't build that" attacks for the past ten days and Wednesday is their biggest push yet with events with small business owners in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Virginia, Ohio, Iowa, Florida, Missouri, North Carolina, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Nevada.

Speaking in Roanoke, Virginia, earlier this month, the president stressed the importance of community as well as continued government investments in infrastructure and public services that many businesses in this country utilize.

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help," Obama said. "Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen."

Republicans pounced on the words "you didn't build that" singling them out and claiming that Obama was speaking directly to business owners about their accomplishments, and that focus continues Wednesday.

In events at small businesses in locations as varied as Waukesha, Wis. to Palm Beach, Fla. to Columbus, Ohio, entrepreneurs will express their anger at the "you didn't build that, somebody else made that happen" line.

Lou Ramos, a small business owner from Tampa, will be at his local event. He owns an information technology and computer training company called Value Enterprise Solutions, Inc. and he said the president's comments made him "almost throw up when I heard it."

Ramos is a 64 year old Hispanic veteran, serving in the military from 1973-97, including two tours at the Pentagon, and he said he did read and watch all of the president's comments in context, not just the two sentences continually highlighted by the campaign.

"I heard the whole thing and I read it," Ramos told ABC News, mentioning he did like Obama when he spoke at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. "I heard the whole thing? The guy was talking sincere? This guy thinks success is about government hand outs and not perseverance."

Ramos was injured-not in combat-but serving in military exercises and now has some disability, but he stressed he never got any federal financial help starting up his business instead getting a bank loan to originally hire three employees.

He said as soon as he heard the comments last week he called other small business owners pleading with them to get involved.

"When President Obama told Americans that government is responsible for their success, it started a wave of anger that has swept across this country," Romney campaign spokesperson Sarah Pompei said. "We wanted to give those businesspeople, entrepreneurs, and hard-working men and women a chance to let President Obama know that government didn't build the small businesses that are the backbone of this country-everyday Americans built them, and they continue to build on America's greatness every day. Today, they're standing up to say, 'We did build this.'"

It's clear the Romney campaign will continue pressing these comments, even unveiling new signs at their events this week with the words "We did build this" written on them.

Tuesday, the Obama campaign released an ad with the president refuting the Romney campaign's new focus and accusing them of intentionally misleading the public saying his words have been "taken out of context."

"Of course Americans build their own businesses," Obama says looking directly at the camera. "Every day, hard-working people sacrifice to meet a payroll, create jobs, and make our economy run."

"And what I said was that we need to stand behind them, as America always has," Obama said in the ad that will run in six swing states.

Hamilton blames 'cruel luck' for Hockenheim fiasco

p>Hockenheim (Germany) July 23 (IANS/CMC) McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton has cursed his ?cruel luck? after a puncture and then gearbox problems forced him to retire in the Formula One German Grand Prix won by Ferrari?s Fernando Alonso.

The 27-year-old Hamilton started from the fourth row but picked up a puncture on the second lap which saw him slip back down the field, CMC reports.

He eventually limped out on the 58th lap as Alonso went on to take his third win of the season.

?My second-lap puncture was incredibly unfortunate. There was debris scattered across the full width of the track and I didn?t have any option other than to drive straight through it,? said Hamilton.

?What?s more frustrating is that, at the time, I was the eighth car through - so to be the one to get the puncture is just cruel luck. It was immediately clear that my car didn?t feel the same after the puncture.

?However, after a few laps, I was able to adapt my driving style, and the car had good pace during the middle stint.?

His teammate Jenson Button finished third but was promoted to second after World champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull was handed a 20-second penalty and demoted to third.

With the failure, Hamilton slipped to fifth in the drivers? championship, 62 points adrift of leader Alonso with 154.

Establish Routines for Business Travel Success

by Tara Schmakel on July 23, 2012

Establish routines when you travel for business

A week and a half ago I returned from a business event that lasted about 3 days and 3 nights.? I?ve attended this event for the last 6 years and always look forward to it.? It is one of 3 trips I take each year as a Director Consultant with BNI.

When I started attending these events, I had only traveled a few times without my family or a friend.? I certainly had never traveled for business.? That was completely new to me.? I struggled with finding my groove.? I was greedy for the information and wanted to absorb everything I possibly could.? However, I found myself struggling and grasping for focus.? I had frequent timid moments and had a hard time immersing myself in the group activities.? Upon returning home, I would crash and sometimes even become sick.? My excuse?? I over did it?

As a Once Timid Networker, I?ve learned to establish a few routines which allow me to have a successful event and remain present for each day.

When attending multi-day events, here are a few things that I?ve learned help me.

  1. Know who will be there and establish your Touchstones.? Your touchstone is your go to person who is supportive of you and helps you reground, refocus and reset yourself.? If you are having a ?Timid Moment? having a few minutes of conversation, a knowing glance, a note or a text with your touchstone, will get you back on track and you will find your power once more.
  2. Watch what you eat and drink.? I bring my own breakfast smoothie stuff as well as snacks.? I find that even though the food selections are great tasting, most times they are different than my normal way of eating.? This way, I have enough protein and vegetables. ?And as always, drink plenty of water throughout the day.? Healthy eating also helps keeps your mind focused while attending these types of events.
  3. Maintain your exercise routine.? I try to get an early walk in, when the circumstances permit.? When I?m staying in an unfamiliar place, I bring a friend.? I look forward to seeing the sunrise and the quiet of the city we are staying in.
  4. Take some time for yourself.? With introverted tendencies, this is vital for continuing the fast-pace and packed schedule.? I?ve tried to skip it and ended up quite tapped before the event is over. ?So when there is a 15 minute break, I?ve often slipped back into my room for some quiet time. ?I?m also a fan of Power Naps.? Many friends know that if I?m missing from the break, I might be grabbing a quick nap. ?Getting enough rest and quiet time helps me stay centered, my mind stay focused and my energy level at its peak.
  5. Take an interest in others.? They may be having the same struggles you did or something similar.? Find out more about them and how you can help them get the most out of the event. ?What are they hoping to walk away with after the event? ??I?ve?made some very good friends since?I?ve?implemented this into my own event routine.

As I reflect on the event I just came home from, things were different this time. ?I was different. ?I had grown.? I had a new focus and added new touchstones. ?Hopefully I made a difference for someone. ?But having my routines made it easy.? Was I tired when I came home?? Yes.? Was I tapped?? Yes.? Did I miss my family, Yes.? Am I looking forward to the next one?? Yes!

I?ve already started my list!

When you travel for business, what things do you do to make sure to get the most out of your event?? Please share, we would love to know!
