Put Chalk in Your Closet to Make It Smell Better

Put Chalk in Your Closet to Make It Smell BetterClosets don't like to stay dry, and often attract unwanted scents (and sometimes creatures who like that environment). Once easy way to solve the problem? According to how-to illlustrator Yumi Sakugawa, the answer is chalk.

Chalk absorbs moisture, as many sources attest, so it's a helpful aid to reduce dampness?and the resulting smell in your closets. Just tie up a bundle with some sturdy string and hang it where it won't brush up against your clothes. It'll absorb moisture, the resulting smell, and your closet will become a nicer place to be.

zodiac yeats: Home Improvement Tips for Spring - ECI Construction ...

March 20 is the first day of spring! Is your home ready for April showers and May flowers? If not, we?ve put together some home maintenance tips to prepare your home for the bright sunshine to come.

Raleigh-Home-Remodeling

  • Check your gutters. The earlier spring months are know for bringing a lot of rain, so it?s important to check for loose or leaky gutters. If they are clogged or full of debris, the water can end up in the basement or crawl space of your home. Check to make sure your gutters lead away from your foundation and are free of any trash.
  • Inspect your roof shingles. From the ground, visually check your roof shingles for any damage from the winter. Replace any shingles that are cracked, buckled or loose as the summer sun can do serious damage to roof shingles. Plumbing vents, chimneys and skylights should be checked and repaired by a qualified roofer.
  • Store firewood away from the home. Keep your firewood 2 feet from your home and at least 18 inches off the ground. Firewood kept near the house can attract spiders, snakes, rats and other pesky insects you don?t want running around your home.
  • Check your hose faucets. Over the winter, the faucet pipes can freeze due to the cold weather. You can check them yourself by turning the water on and placing your thumb over the opening. If you can stop the water from coming out, more than likely the pipe is damaged and will need to be replaced.
  • Prepare your lawn equipment. Check your gas and battery powered lawn mower, weed trimmer, etc and make sure they are ready for the summer. Cleaning the equipment and installing new cutting blades will make the yardwork easier.
  • ECI Construction has over 25 years of home remodeling and home repair experience. As a North Carolina local, President Doug Muehle understands the effects the seasons can have on a home. If you?re ready to prepare your home for the upcoming warmer months, do not hesitate to give him and his team a call. Syrian rebel chief: Fighters 'will not give up'

BEIRUT (AP) ? The chief of Syria's main, Western-backed rebel group marked the second anniversary of the start of the uprising against President Bashar Assad on Friday by pledging to fight until the "criminal" regime is gone.

Gen. Salim Idris, the head of the Supreme Military Council, called on Syrian soldiers to join the rebels in a "fight for freedom and democracy," and said: "Dear friends, the Free Syrian Army (fighters) will not give up."

In Damascus, authorities beefed up security measures as rebel groups called for stepped-up attacks on government troops and state institutions on the anniversary.

The revolt against Assad's authoritarian rule began in March 2011 with protests in the southern city of Daraa, after troops arrested teenagers who scrawled anti-regime graffiti on a wall. It has since morphed into a civil war that has killed an estimated 70,000 people, according to the U.N.

"We want (a) Syria where every Syrian can live in peace and liberty. This is our dream. This is what we are fighting for," Idris said in a video address obtained by The Associated Press form the military council's media office.

He spoke in an undisclosed location in northern Syria that is under rebel control.

"I know our battle is not so easy. We have to fight against planes, tanks and huge missiles," Idris said. "But our will is still very strong. We will not stop until this criminal regime has gone."

Idris, 55, studied in Germany and taught electronics at a Syrian military college before defecting to the rebel side in July.

In the past year, the rebels have made significant advances on the battlefield, capturing large swathes of land outside of major cities and along the border with Turkey and controlling some areas in the northern city of Aleppo, Syria's largest urban center and its commercial hub. They have also seized border crossings along the frontier with Turkey and Iraq and have overrun major military bases. They captured dams on the Euphrates River and came within a mile of the center of Damascus, the seat of Assad's power.

On Friday, rebels battled regime forces in several smaller army bases and weapons depots around Aleppo, seizing some ammunition in an army depot near a village of Khan Touman, southwest of the city, according to activist groups.

An activist in Aleppo province, who is widely known as Yassin Abu Raed, said rebels led by the Jabhat al-Nusra and other Islamic radical groups also seized control of a checkpoint protecting a military academy.

Abu Raed, who did not give his real name for fear of persecution by the regime, also said rebels seized a missile base in al-Rashideen area in Aleppo province. Another activist group, The Observatory for Human Rights, said fighting for the missile base was ongoing.

In activist videos posted online Friday, rebels are seen walking around a warehouse, opening wooden boxes that contain missiles.

The videos appeared consistent with reporting from the area by The Associated Press.

The rebels have long complained that their side is hampered by the failure of world powers to provide heavier arms to help them battle Assad's better-equipped military and his airpower. The international community is reluctant to send weapons partly because of fears they may fall into the hands of extremists who have been gaining influence among the rebels.

Last month, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced that the Obama administration was giving an additional $60 million in assistance to Syria's political opposition and would, for the first time, provide non-lethal aid directly to the rebels. None of the aid, which is to include an undetermined amount of food rations and medical supplies, has been sent yet.

On Friday, leaders at a European Union summit failed to agree if they should send arms to the rebels.

An EU embargo prohibits any arms from being sent to Syria, whether to the rebels or to the Assad regime. That embargo is scheduled to remain in effect until May, when it will either be renewed or allowed to expire.

France and Britain have argued that they should be able supply arms to the rebels, saying the Assad regime is receiving arms from Russia and Iran. France and Britain claim that with more weaponry, the rebels could defend themselves and the civilian population and members of the Assad regime would see more clearly a need to negotiate a political settlement.

On Friday, some anti-government groups called for stepped-up attacks to mark the anniversary of the uprising. The banned Islamist Muslim Brotherhood group urged supporters for a "week of action" on the occasion but didn't specify what it would do.

A Damascus-based activist who identified himself as Abu Qais said regime troops increased patrols and security searches in the country's capital. He spoke on condition his real name not be used for security concerns.

In neighboring Lebanon, gunmen set fire to three fuel tankers with Syrian license plates to prevent them from crossing into Syria, the state-run National News Agency said.

The Lebanese news agency said the incident occurred in the northern city of Tripoli, and that the tankers were carrying fuel when they were stopped by the protesters and later set on fire. No casualties were reported.

In the past, protesters have closed roads to keep tankers from crossing into Syria, where there are severe gasoline and diesel shortages. They claim diesel exported to Syria is being used by regime tanks.

Many among Lebanon's Sunni Muslims have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebel forces, in which radical Islamists have become increasingly active. Lebanese Shiite Muslims, including the militant Hezbollah group, have leaned toward Assad, whose tiny Alawite sect is an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Separately, the Syrian Foreign Ministry complained in a letter sent to the Lebanese government on Thursday that armed groups have tried to infiltrate Syria from Lebanon repeatedly in the past 36 hours, triggering clashes with border guards.

Damascus said Syrian troops have exercised "utmost self-restraint" until now but warned that "this would not continue endlessly."

Also on Friday, at least eight Syrians were killed and 29 were injured when the bus they were traveling in from Syria overturned in the mountains in central Lebanon, officials said. The bus was headed to the Lebanese capital, Beirut, when the accident occurred in the Kahhaleh region.

George Kettaneh, operations director for the Lebanese Red Cross, said the casualties included women and children. He said it's unclear why the bus overturned.

It was not immediately known whether the Syrians were refugees fleeing the violence at home. The bus had Syrian license plates from the northeastern Hassakeh province, which recently witnessed heavy clashes.

More than 1 million Syrians have fled the country's civil war to seek shelter in neighboring countries. In Lebanon alone, the U.N. has registered more than 360,000 Syrian refugees.

Conn Carroll: California becoming a feudal society

Welcome to the demographics of the ?NEW? California.? It will be much older, less educated and more dependent on government.? It will be a European style welfare state.? As the demographics move in that direction expect the educated and the productive to leave even quicker.? We are watching as Sacramento policies are killing our farms, manufacturing has died, even Hollywood is moving to Tennessee, Canada and Mexico.

Below is the future of California ?Medicare and welfare.? Plus the very rich who love the weather and can afford high taxes and very high consumer prices.

?Unfortunately for California, this local-born population is not increasing fast enough to replace the disappearing immigration. The number of Californians under age 18 will virtually halt over the next 20 years, while population growth among those 65 and older will quadruple. The current ratio of one senior for every five working-age residents will become a 3-to-10 ratio by 2020, and 4-to-10 by 2030.

If California?s new native-born population was particularly wealthy or well-educated, this demographic imbalance might not be such a big problem. But it is not. And this will severely strain California?s generous welfare state.

Conn Carroll: California becoming a feudal society

Conn Carroll, The Washington Examiner, 3/2/13

For most of its history, California has occupied a special place in the mind of most Americans. From the height of the Gold Rush through the 1980s, California?s warm weather and booming economy drew enterprising, educated and talented immigrants from across the country. California was the melting pot of America?s melting pot, leading all states in the number of residents who were born in other U.S. states.

As I wrote in The Washington Examiner?s ?California in Crisis? series last week, that California is dead and gone. According to a 2012 University of Southern California study on state demographics, you have to go back to the early 1990s to find a time when more Americans were moving to California than leaving it for other states. Thanks to high housing prices and a weak job market, California is now a net exporter of U.S. citizens to other states.

As a result of this shift, native Californians became a majority of the state?s population only in the last decade. Their numbers will continue to rise. And since foreign immigration is also expected to level off, the report predicts growth will occur ?almost all among native Californians, many but not all of whom are the children of immigrants.?

Unfortunately for California, this local-born population is not increasing fast enough to replace the disappearing immigration.

Even before the Great Recession, California already suffered from some of the highest levels of income inequality in the nation. And according to recent Public Policy Institute of California study, the recent downturn only exacerbated the problem. ?Compared to the rest of the country, California experienced larger declines in income at the bottom of the distribution and smaller declines at the top ? leading to the largest gap between upper and lower incomes in at least 30 years,? PPIC reported.

Worse, a 2012 California Budget Project study found that what little job recovery has occurred in the state has been confined to the low-skill sector. The employment rate for prime-working-age Californians with a bachelor?s degree or higher has been flat since the recovery began, whereas those with just a high school diploma and those without one have both seen job gains. To the extent that the California labor market is recovering, it is a McJobs recovery.

Of course, the Googles, Facebooks and Apples of California are all still swimming in profits and growth. If you do happen to have a job already among the highest fifth of California income earners, your weekly wages are up 1 percent since 2006. But every other income group has experienced sharp earnings losses.

California is rapidly becoming a near-feudal society. On one side is an older, educated, landed, wealthy elite that lives on California?s beautiful coasts. Then there is a much larger, younger, less-educated, indebted mass living inland, many of them working farm jobs at subsistence wages.

The good news is that both of these groups seem content supporting a Democratic Party whose policies (which I outlined in the series last week) reinforce these trends. And if any of the current Californians don?t like what the new California has become, they are free to leave.

The bad news is that millions of middle-class families already have, and the trend is likely to continue.

Nike suspends contract with Oscar Pistorius

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? Nike Inc. has suspended its contract with Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee runner from South Africa charged with premeditated murder in the Valentine's Day slaying of his girlfriend.

Pistorius, who became the first double-amputee runner to compete on the track at the Olympics at last year's London Games, is accused of intentionally killing model Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius says he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder and that the shooting was accidental.

"We believe Oscar Pistorius should be afforded due process and we will continue to monitor the situation closely," Nike said in a brief statement posted on its website Wednesday.

On Monday, eyewear maker Oakley Inc. suspended its contract with Pistorius.

Nike dropped Lance Armstrong in October, citing insurmountable evidence that he participated in doping and misled the company about those activities for more than a decade. But the Beaverton, Ore.-based company stood by Tiger Woods after he acknowledged infidelities and went to rehab for sex addiction.

Pistorius was born without fibula bones due to a congenital defect, and had his legs amputated at 11 months. He runs on carbon-fiber blades and was originally banned from competing against able-bodied peers because many argued that his blades gave him an unfair advantage.

In 2008, however, the Court of Arbitration for Sport cleared him to compete against the fastest in the world.

Pistorius is a multiple Paralympic medalist, but he failed to win a medal at the London Olympics, where he ran in the 400 meters and on South Africa's 4x400 relay team.

He won a silver medal with his country's 4x400 relay team at the 2011 world championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Survey Says: 10% Of Netflix Subscribers Have Streamed House Of ...

It?s been a little more than two weeks since Netflix released its long-awaited original series House of Cards to the public. The entire first season of the show, which stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright and was produced by David Fincher, was released at once, leading many subscribers to binge-watch over the first few weeks.

Netflix has been mum on viewership of House of Cards, preferring so far not to break out the number of subscribers who have watched it or how many hours they?ve watched. The company has said, however, that?the program is its most-watched show. And research from financial services firm Cowen and Company suggests that Netflix?s original programming is already starting to pay dividends for the streaming service.

Cowen surveyed 1,200 people last week, of which about 28 percent were paying Netflix subscribers, and another 18 percent had access to a Netflix streaming account. Of those, about 10 percent had watched House of Cards during the first few weeks it was available. And they?re not just watching one episode ? on average, Netflix viewers had streamed an average of six episodes of the new original series.

Viewers generally rated the series well, with 80 percent saying it was ?good? or ?exceptional.? Viewers also liked Netflix making all 13 episodes of the first season available at the same time. According to the survey, 90 percent viewed that release plan positively, as they gobbled up multiple episodes per viewing session.

The release schedule and the quality of the show could have a positive effect on Netflix subscriber retention, according to the survey. About 86 percent of those surveyed said they would be less likely to cancel after viewing House of Cards. And the new original programming could bring in more subscribers. Thirty-four percent of all those surveyed said they were aware of Netflix?s original programming plans. The largest percentage were aware of Netflix?s plans to bring back Arrested Development, with another 19 percent of everyone surveyed aware of House of Cards.

The survey also found that current subscribers watch about 6.5 hours of content a week on about 2.5 devices per account. Approximately 23 percent of Netflix subscribers said they had cancelled their cable or satellite TV service. Those who had cancelled watched about 8.5 hours of content on average.

With more than 23.6 million members in the United States and Canada, Netflix, Inc. is the world?s leading Internet subscription service for enjoying movies and TV shows. For $7.99 a month, Netflix members in the U.S. can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streaming right to their TVs and computers and can receive unlimited DVDs delivered quickly to their homes. In Canada, streaming unlimited movies and TV shows from Netflix is available for $7.99 a month. There are...

McCain defends immigration plan to angry residents

PHOENIX (AP) ? Arizona took center stage in the national immigration debate Tuesday as Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano toured the state's border with Mexico and Sen. John McCain defended his proposed immigration overhaul to an angry crowd in suburban Phoenix.

The presence of the top officials is the latest sign that Arizona will play a prominent role in the immigration debate as President Barack Obama looks to make it a signature issue of his second term.

Napolitano toured the border near Nogales with the highest-ranking official at U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the incoming chairman of the Senate's homeland security committee and an Arizona congressman. Napolitano, Arizona's former governor, said afterward that comprehensive immigration reform will strengthen the nation's border against criminals and other threats.

Also Tuesday, McCain hosted two town hall meetings in Arizona, during which he defended his immigration plan to upset residents concerned about border security. A bipartisan group of senators ? including Arizona Republicans McCain and Jeff Flake ? want assurances on border security as Congress weighs what could be the biggest changes to immigration law in nearly 30 years. Arizona is the only state with both of its senators working on immigration reform in Congress, a sign of the state's widely debated border security issues.

Immigration activists and elected officials say it's only natural for Arizona to continue to take the forefront in the national conversation on immigration after years of internal debate on the topic.

"No state in this country has had more experience with enforcement-only immigration laws than Arizona," said Todd Landfried, executive director of Arizona Employers for Immigration Reform, which opposes the state's tough immigration laws.

During a heated town hall gathering in the Phoenix suburb of Sun Lakes, McCain said the border near Yuma is largely secure, but he said smugglers are using the border near Tucson to pump drugs into Phoenix. He said immigration reform should be contingent on better border security that must rely largely on technology able to detect border crossings.

McCain said a tamper-proof Social Security card would help combat identity fraud, and noted any path to citizenship must require immigrants to learn English, cover back taxes and pay fines for breaking immigration laws.

"There are 11 million people living here illegally," he said. "We are not going to get enough buses to deport them."

Some audience members shouted out their disapproval.

One man yelled that only guns would discourage illegal immigration. Another man complained that illegal immigrants should never be able to become citizens or vote. A third man said illegal immigrants were illiterate invaders who wanted free government benefits.

McCain urged compassion. "We are a Judeo-Christian nation," he said. McCain's other town hall meeting took place in Green Valley, south of Tucson.

Arizona gained international recognition as an epicenter of the U.S. immigration debate when it passed its tough anti-immigrant law in 2010. A handful of other states ? including Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah ? have since adopted variations of Arizona's law.

Arizona has the nation's eighth-highest population of illegal immigrants, according to the Pew Research Hispanic Center. In 2010, illegal immigrants represented roughly 6 percent of the state's population.

Activists said Arizona's anti-immigrant laws inspired many illegal immigrants to demand more rights. Last week, some college students rallied outside Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer's office for driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.

"They no longer are afraid to come and say, 'I am not able to vote, but I can make my voice heard, and they have to listen to me,'" said community organizer Abril Gallardo.

A report released in January showed the U.S. Border Patrol's Tucson sector remains the busiest along the U.S.-Mexico border. The Tucson sector accounted for 38 percent of all drug seizures and 37 percent of all apprehensions along the border.

Brewer said last week the border cannot be declared safe until the people living near it feel secure from drug and human trafficking.

But Democratic Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona told Latino and black community leaders at a Phoenix luncheon Tuesday that Arizonans need to spread the word on how much more secure the border has become.

"There are lots of folks who don't live in Arizona who have no idea what the border is like," Sinema said.

Napolitano toured the border Tuesday afternoon with U.S. Customs and Border Protection Deputy Commissioner David Aguilar, Democratic Rep. Ron Barber of Arizona and Democratic Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware. Carper is the incoming chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

She said in a statement after the tour that border crossings are down 50 percent since 2008 and 78 percent since their peak in 2000.

Brain Age: Concentration Training (Nintendo 3DS)

Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day was one of the first inexplicable hits of the Nintendo DS. It provided a regimen of brain teasers and puzzles to supposedly prevent decreasing brain function. I'm not a doctor, and I can't attest to whether it "worked" or not, but it was fun and a good game for commuting and killing minutes between activities. Several sequels and years later, Brain Age: Concentration Training jumps to the Nintendo 3DS with a new take on training your brain. Again, I don't know if it actually helps, but I do know its brain teasers and puzzles are addictive. Brain Age is a lot like Sudoku?only engaging and fun.

Devilishly Difficult
Brain Age: Concentration Training focuses on improving your "working memory" rather than keeping up brain function. It does this through several "Devilish Training" modes that make you track moves, keep numbers or words in your head, and otherwise hold several things in your head at once. As its name implies, it's a lot harder than the regular Brain Age activities. Modes like Devilish Calculations have you making a simple arithmetic calculation, then another, then remembering what the first one was. As you do better, you have to remember more and more, until you find yourself trying to keep four answers in your head and jotting them down in order while doing new calculations.

Each Devilish Training mode puts you through a five-minute marathon of testing, bumping up the difficulty if you get over 85 percent of the problems correct and bumping you down is you miss less than 65 percent. After five minutes, you're scored and your level is saved for when you use that mode next. There are eight different types of Devilish Training modes, but only one is available at first. The others unlock as you play a little more every day.

Other Attractions
Besides Devilish Training, there are Brain Training and Supplemental Training activities, each with nine different modes. Supplemental Training is a selection of classic Brain Age puzzles to keep your mind working. Brain Training is a collection of minigames including a few different solitaire games and puzzles. There's also a Relaxation Mode that includes a color-matching puzzle game, a Dr. Mario-like puzzle game (complete with pills and germs), and a relaxing music player.

StreetPass lets you compare your records with people you pass on the street. You can also keep track of family and friends' training on the same system. You can even compete with training partners and set goals for yourself against other players. There's no head-to-head mode, which is a shame considering there's a Dr. Mario game included, but Brain Age isn't a competitive activity, anyway.

Brain Age: Concentration Training offers a new way to train your mind and improve your working memory, or so Nintendo claims. I don't know if that's the case, but I do know that Brain Age: Concentration Training has enough activities to keep your brain engaged whenever you find yourself with a few minutes to kill, and is a great game for 3DS owners who don't necessarily want to play regular games. Even if it does absolutely nothing for the brain, it's worth a solid four stars on the strength of its fun puzzles and tremendous replayability.

Clive Davis Opens The Discussion On Bi-Sexuality In The Music ...

Are the music industry and it?s artists finally feeling comfortable about coming out?

For a long time, sexuality, or at least homosexuality and bi-sexuality, were taboo subjects to talk about in the music industry. Those artists who were anything but straight, either avoided talking about their personal life or they put up a front for the sake of not losing their fanbase. However, it seems as though we?ve seen a shift over the last few years as artists like Nicki Minaj, Azealia Banks, Ke$ha and most recently Frank Ocean have talked openly about their bi-sexuality and attraction to the same sex.

Legendary music executive Clive Davis is releasing a new memoir titled, ?The Soundtrack Of My Life,? and inside he reveals that he experimented with his sexuality after his second marriage failed. He also says that he believes that bi-sexuality is misunderstood:

After my second marriage failed, I met a man who was also grounded in music. Having only had loving relationships and sexual intimacy with women, I opened myself up to the possibility that I could have that with a male, and found that I could.

I never stopped being attracted to women. Bisexuality is misunderstood; the adage is that you?re either straight or gay or lying, but that?s not my experience. To call me anything other than bisexual would be inaccurate.

Interestingly enough, in the urban music community, an artist who says that they are bi-sexual will either be labeled as gay or will be written off as trying to gain attention for the sake of publicity and album sales.

While revealing to the NY Times that she was bi-sexual, Azealia Banks said:

I?m not trying to be, like, the bisexual, lesbian rapper. I don?t live on other people?s terms.

Most believed she only said that to get people?s attention.

Music producer Jermaine Dupri recently stopped by Power 105.1FM?s Breakfast Club and when he was asked if he felt as though Frank Ocean ?coming out? was a marketing ploy, he responded:

100 percent. I mean sometimes, I don?t even believe that, I believe it?s a marketing plan. A person that comes out and lets his sexuality be known is considered a person that has balls.

Back in 2009, when I interviewed Nicki Minaj, I asked about the bi-sexual references in her songs and her choice to dodge questions regarding her sexuality in interviews. I said, ?There are some people that feel as though you gave black women who were afraid to be ?free? with their sexuality a voice (especially in Hip Hop) but then you sort of pulled back. How do you feel about that?? Her response was:

I pulled back on a lot of things so to specify that is kind of unfair. When I started to see how influential I was, I toned a lot of things down. I want to think more before I speak, I want to think about every message I?m sending. I did not realize I had 10-year-old fans. When you are in that position, it?s your job to be responsible. I say what I say in my rap.

I believe that rap is art. It?s like people want art and life to coincide. Sometimes it doesn?t and sometimes you do not want it to. Sometimes you want to have an interview and not discuss anything about sex. That?s how I feel sometimes. I do put the block up because I feel like all people want to talk about is sex. I give you enough in my record. You know who I am and you can hear what I?m saying. It?s just too much.

Looking back, there are still a few critics who think that Nicki Minaj talked about liking girls in her earlier records for attention but would it be that hard to accept if she really was bi-sexual? Is it still taboo in today?s music industry or are we in a time when an artist can be accepted for being gay or bi-sexual without it ruining their career in some way or another?

Opinion: How Microsoft could regain its footing (Hint: more Office, less Windows)

Even after several months, I don't know what to make of Windows 8. And Microsoft's tablet initiative feels like it's on the rocks. Still, when I look at SkyDrive and Outlook.com ? which will replace Hotmail completely by this summer ? I see hope for the company. All that's missing is Office for iPad ... and iPhone ... and Android.

Excellent webmail and cloud storage services could help Microsoft grab users from the competition. But Google is doing a great job on both of those fronts, too, and Amazon, Apple and others play in that same space. The big gun, the thing that Microsoft still does better than everybody else, is the office suite. Microsoft's recent launch of the subscription-based any-device Office 365 is testament to the fact that the company ? or at least that incredibly successful division ? understands the benefit of not being locked to one platform. So what are the folks in Redmond waiting for?

Here's how the pieces fit together: Webmail is the most popular Web service there is, and it's a good gateway to other services. (Just ask Google, which makes a regular practice out of nagging Gmailers to get on Google+.) SkyDrive is a great add-on service because it serves as a spillover for Outlook.com mail: If you have a lot of attachments, or files that are really big, Outlook asks you to throw them into a shareable SkyDrive folder instead. And Office 2013 already connects to SkyDrive to save stuff in the cloud.

Outlook and SkyDrive are cheerfully platform agnostic: The Outlook team released an Android mail app last fall, and optimized its compatibility with iOS's Mail. Meanwhile, SkyDrive syncs beautifully on Macs and iPhones, and lots of other devices too. Success in webmail and cloud storage leaves a lot of options open for Microsoft, and cross compatibility means decreasing the dependence on Windows. No matter how much Microsoft wants to save Windows, its other businesses need to acknowledge the fact that operating systems don't matter anymore.

Look, your car may look different than mine, and have more cupholders, but we can both drive on the same roads. Applications (software written for specific computers) gave way to the Internet, where software lived somewhere out in the ether. We are now in a third age where apps, optimized for our devices, bring services from the Internet. I don't care if you love Windows 8 or hate it, ditto for OS X, iOS, Android or even Chrome OS (not that you've necessarily heard of Google's browser-based desktop OS) ? they are but vehicles.

I know what you are thinking: Apple and Google have been using their recent success to push music and video, storage, photo management, even social networking, all in one "ecosystem." While it makes sense on paper, people don't buy books from Apple, they buy 'em from Amazon; they don't stream music and movies from Google, they get it from Spotify and Netflix. Apple's Ping social network didn't exactly have the momentum of Google+, so it implanted both Twitter and Facebook directly into all of its operating systems.

Lately I have looked around for services outside of "ecosystems" precisely because they won't tie me down inconveniently to one family of like-branded products. Even if you love Apple (or Samsung) products so much to only buy them, you still have to get every single one of your family members to do the same in order to start enjoying the benefits of some services such as messaging, photo sharing, etc.

So what about office software? We have seen serviceable iWork apps from Apple, but they won't run on Android. We've seen some shabby free office suites that will. Google Docs, which I use all the time for collaboration, are lightweight and platform indifferent, but they lack the power and versatility of classic Office. Despite the usual design and workflow criticism, we can agree that nobody does the whole package better than Microsoft.

What we want ? and I'm pretty sure I really am speaking for most of the world here ? is Microsoft's suite on whatever device we happen to be using.

So how about it, Redmond? Office for the iPad, this year? Seriously. One hundred million iPad users can't be totally wrong. SkyDrive should be integrated for storing documents, and an update for OS X should provide SkyDrive access. Meanwhile, an Outlook.com mail account should be a (free) requirement to sync these services.

So then, five years from now, when people are laughing about that whole Windows 8 thing, at least the formerly all-powerful software maker will continue to make billions in profit from its Office suite, which would remain a must-have ubiquitous service for paying customers anywhere ... on any device. Ya dig?

F-16s intercept planes near Obama's holiday retreat

By Ian Johnston, Staff Writer, NBC News

F-16 fighter jets intercepted two aircraft after they entered temporarily restricted airspace near the Florida club where President Barack Obama was spending the long President?s Day weekend.

In a statement on its Facebook page, NORAD said two F-16s were sent to deal with a Lancair 320 aircraft ?that was not in communications with air controllers ? near Port St. Lucie,? Fla., at 5:10 p.m. Sunday.

?Following the intercept, the ? aircraft was escorted out of the [area] and allowed to continue on," it added.

NORAD also said in another Facebook posting that a Cessna was caught inside the off-limits zone at about 9:30 a.m. ET Saturday.

?Following the intercept, the aircraft departed the [restricted area] and landed at Okeechobee Airport where it was met by local authorities,? the statement said.

Obama is taking three days off in Florida while Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia are in Colorado on a skiing trip.

He is staying at the Floridian, described by The Associated Press as ?an exclusive and secluded yacht and golf club on the state's Treasure Coast.?

On Sunday, the president played a round of golf with Tiger Woods at the club.

Tornado slams Mississippi college town

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) ? A tornado tore through Hattiesburg on Sunday as part of a wave of severe storms that downed trees, damaged buildings and injured more than a dozen people.

The twister traveled down one of Hattiesburg's main streets and mangled homes, commercial buildings and structures on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. Emergency officials said at least 10 people were injured in surrounding Forrest County and three were hurt to the west in Marion County, but they weren't aware of any deaths.

Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman Greg Flynn said it appears that a single tornado caused the damage in those two counties and Lamar County. Hundreds of homes are damaged in Forrest County, along with a couple dozen in the other two. Gov. Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency.

Flynn said the sheer scope of the damage was slowing their assessment.

"The problem is, it was so strong that there's so much debris that there's a lot of areas they haven't been able to get to yet," he said.

On the campus of the university, trees were snapped in half around the heavily damaged Alumni House where part of the roof was ripped away. Windows in a nearby building were blown out, and heavy equipment worked to clear streets nearby in a heavy rain after the worst of the weather had passed.

The university released a statement saying no one was hurt but that it was under a state of emergency, anyone away from campus should stay away until further notice.

East of campus, 47-year-old Cindy Bullock was at home with her husband and dog, a terrier mix named Vinnie, when she heard the tornado coming. They ran to a hallway and covered their heads. It wasn't long before the windows in the kitchen and bedroom exploded. The storm stripped all the shingles off the roof and left holes in it, while knocking over a large pine tree in the yard.

After dark, the Bullocks were trying to arrange their stuff inside so it wouldn't get wet from the dripping water.

"I just looked out the window and I heard the rumbling. It sounded like a train. We ran to the hall, and the kitchen windows and the windows in the bedroom exploded. It happened pretty fast," she said.

There were large trees blocking the road all through her neighborhood, and several of the houses were hit by falling trees. Her friend was staying with them after the friend's apartment took a direct hit from a falling tree.

Forrest County Sheriff Billy McGee says 10 or 15 people were injured by the tornado that slammed Hattiesburg and other parts of the county ? but none of the injuries was serious.

He says, "Most of our injuries have been walking wounded."

To the west, Marion County emergency director Aaron Greer says three injuries have been reported in the community of Pickwick, about seven miles south of Columbia. He says two people were taken to hospitals, but the third didn't have the injury examined.

Greer says one mobile home was destroyed, three other structures have major damage and several have minor damage.

Bryant plans to go to Hattiesburg on Monday to check out damage in the city and at USM, his alma mater, spokesman Mick Bullock said.

On Sunday night, John and Katherine Adams were cleaning up around their one-story white house where the storm punched holes in the roof, busted windows and completely destroyed the back porch. The couple was at home with their 7- and 3-year-old daughters when the tornado passed next to their house.

All through the neighborhood, houses and vehicles were damaged by falling trees.

"We're safe, and that's all that matters," said Katherine Adams, 46.

John Adams, who's in the building supply business, said he was surprised to see broken boards that appeared to be from new construction in his yard because there are no homes being built nearby.

"We've got stuff around here; I don't even know where it came from," he said.

All Is Well That Eats Well: Tomato Basil Rigatoni

Craving the perfect comfort food? ?I love this pasta dish- it satisfies this very special spot in my soul and ?tummy :) ?The combination of garlic, fresh basil and tomatoes is so fresh and cozy. ?And it is so easy to make! ?Almost always, I have all of the ingredients hanging around my kitchen. ?To my northeast friends, hope you are staying warm in the blizzard- this would be a great dish to enjoy tonight :-)

Ingredients:
2 cups grape tomatoes halved
1 big bunch fresh basil chopped (about 1/2 cup after chopped)
3 large cloves garlic crushed
1/4 cup olive oil
16 oz rigatoni (or pasta of your choice- I like using ziti or shells as well)
Fine sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Fresh grated parmesan cheeseDirections:
1. ?Prepare pasta according to package instructions. ?While pasta is cooking, saut? crushed garlic in 3 tablespoons olive oil for about two minutes.

2. ?Add the tomatoes and some salt and continue saut?ing for about 2-3 minutes until tomatoes start to become soft.

3. ?Finally add fresh basil and saut? for an additional 1-2 minutes. ?By this point you should have a heavenly, aromatic sauce. ?Mmmmmm :-)

4. ?Add cooked pasta to tomato, basil and garlic sauce. ?Then add the remaining olive oil and combine ingredients well. ?Adjust salt and add pepper at this point. ?Serve in bowls and add fresh grated parmesan cheese!

Enjoy this cozy and scrumptious dish from my kitchen to yours!

Father of the Year | Footprints of Fatherhood

I?ve been quiet for a number of months now ? not for lack of thinking of writing, but I guess there truly is a season for everything.

And I guess it takes something significant to stir the desire to add something to the ever increasing depth of fatherhood blogging. ?Something like the recent commentary on true fatherhood with the announcement by the National Father?s Day Council (US) that Bill Clinton has been named ?Father of the Year?.

Shocked? ?Maybe. ?Our memories are not too short to drift back to the days of the early nineties and the drama surrounding Mr. Clinton?s very public private life. ?The comments at the end of the politico.com article show this to be true.

Yet looking over the news release put out by Rueters, there is no mention of him as a father other than saying he has one daughter, Chelsey. ?Here is what Dan Orwig of the Father?s Day Council says in the news release:

?With the profound generosity, leadership and tireless dedication to both his public office and many philanthropic organizations, president Clinton exemplifies the attributes that we celebrate through the father of the year award.?

These are all good things ? strong values that impact our world. ?But this says nothing about Mr. Clinton?s relationship with his wife and daughter.? I?m curious why the standards are set outside the home? ? ?Are they saying that the best dads are primarily involved in people?s lives outside of their families?

What are the standards we hold fathers to?

faithfulness to the mother of their child?
being a role-model worthy of their children?s respect?
community service?
church attendance?
reading to their children every night?
being gracious with their leadership of their family?
driving a minivan?

Fatherhood is more than a relationship between a man and his children. ?It is a statement to the world that there are good men, and good men are necessary for the future of a just society. ?Some would even say that a father?s heart focused on his children keeps peace and blessing in a society. ?I believe this to be true.

Are there good men out there? ? I believe this also. ?They are being the men that this world needs ? men who care about truth, have high standards of themselves, expect high standards from people around them, and react with grace when those standards are not met. ?The only place that Father of the Year should really matter is within the home of each and every dad, grand-dad, uncle and older brother who is influencing a child.

So despite our recollections of Mr. Clinton?s affairs, we must remember that 20 years have passed. ?People do change. ?Commitments can be renewed. ?Grace can be shown ? even to men who make very public and potentially damaging choices. But I can?t help but wonder if the premis under which he has been named Father of the Year doesn?t water down the essence of strong fatherhood.

And so I won?t give in to the urging and swaying and prompting to compromise the standard of what strong fatherhood is. ?Those standards are the footprints by which children can find their way. ?Those are the standards that I hope you help me reach for.

?How do good men become part of the regime?
They don?t believe in resistance.?

The swish of skis, good food and drink, and fun company

This week has zoomed by, and sadly, everyone is leaving tomorrow. It was lots of fun and we enjoyed it as much as anyone.
More skiing and this time Penn was with our group for his second day post lessons. He did amazingly well! Amanda had a 90 minute massage, and Jay chilled at the house. Everyone doing what they wanted - happy.
Fox and coyote everywhere. Caught these two late afternoon, pausing in their hunting endeavors.

Great weather for the entire week. This area at its winter best -sunny piercing blue skies and brilliant white snow.

What is it about untouched snow that causes people to want to fall into it..
On a bad day, we must remember there are clearly worse things...
Garlic Mikes for a nice dinner out. Good company and yummy food.
Local news, Paradise Cafe has moved into the Forest Queen Hotel, and Heather just found out the entire building where Paradise was, will be the new home of Secret Stash. Wow!

California boy to be arraigned in "swatting" prank on actor Kutcher

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Prosecutors charged a 12-year-old boy on Thursday with making a false emergency call that sent police swarming to the home of actor Ashton Kutcher in a "swatting" prank.

The name of the boy, who was arrested by Los Angeles police in December, was withheld due to his age. He was scheduled to be arraigned in a juvenile court in Los Angeles on Friday.

The trend toward placing false emergency calls is known as "swatting" because SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) officers often are sent to the purported crime scenes. Authorities say such situations can be dangerous due to the risk of a misunderstanding between police and occupants of a building.

The boy has been charged with two felony counts each of making false bomb threats and computer intrusion in connection with the October 3 emergency call that drew police to the Hollywood Hills home of Kutcher, star of the sitcom "Two and a Half Men," and a similar call on October 10 that sent police to a Wells Fargo Bank.

Authorities have accused the boy of having reported men armed with guns and explosives in Kutcher's home and that several people had been shot. Dozens of emergency personnel were sent to the house. Kutcher was not home at the time.

Swatting calls in recent months have also sent police to the homes of singers Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus.

Boston Top 5 winter storms ever: Blizzard of 2013 could top the list

A 2003 winter storm dumped a record 27.5 inches of snow in Boston. No. 5 on the list is a 2005 storm that dropped 22.5 inches. The Blizzard of 2013 looks likely to top that, at least.?

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / February 8, 2013

The meteorological dilettantes among us will periodically prod snowbanks with yardsticks as the Blizzard of 2013 deposits its snow on eastern Massachusetts and beyond this weekend. But when it comes to storm records for Boston, all eyes will be on Logan Airport's snow gauge ? the ultimate arbiter.

The Blizzard of 2013, which the Weather Channel as dubbed a somewhat unintimidating winter storm Nemo, is expected to dump at least 24 inches of snow on Boston. Anything over 22.8 inches will guarantee the storm makes the list of the five snowiest storms since 1892, according to records kept at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Taunton, Mass., which covers southern New England.

For Many Bostonians, the frame of reference for winter storms for now remains the Blizzard of 1978, which struck 35 years ago this week. It dumped 27.1 inches of snow on a city already coping with the leftovers from a storm three weeks earlier. That earlier storm brought 21 inches of snow.

The '78 storm remains the snowiest on record for Providence, R.I., although it ranks No. 10 for Worcester, Mass.. In Hartford, Conn., the '78 storm is tied for eighth place with a storm that hit in December 1947 and dumped 16.9 inches of snow on the city.

For Boston, the record for snow in a single storm belongs to the Blizzard of 2003, which struck on Presidents Day that year. The storm affected a long swath of the East Coast from Washington, D.C., through Boston. It brought record snow to Baltimore as well, which groaned under 28.2 inches of snow.

That storm's genesis bears a striking resemblance to the blizzard heading into the Northeast today. A storm system that formed over the southern Rockies on Feb. 14, 2003, headed east. As it approached, it triggered the formation of a coastal storm off the Carolinas.

That storm began to move up the coast, following a typical path for nor'easters. Meanwhile, a large pool of cold air linked to a high pressure system over eastern Canada provided the chill needed to make sure the usual line between rain and snow fell much farther south than it typically does. With the coastal storm drawing plenty of moisture from the Atlantic Ocean, the stage was set for the deep snows that blanketed the region in the storm's aftermath.

Five snowiest storms on record for Boston (since 1892)

  • Feb. 17-18, 2003 - 27.5 inches (Presidents Day storm)
  • Feb. 6-7, 1978 - 27.1 inches
  • Feb. 24-27, 1969 - 26.3 inches
  • March 31-April 1, 1997 - 25.4 inches (April Fools' storm)
  • Jan. 22-23, 2005 - 22.5 inches
