Those Texas History Curriculum Revisions

Katherine Stewart has an article at AlterNet about the changes made to the history curriculum by the Texas Board of Education that reveal just how bad those revisions were. Some of this stuff is straight out of the David Barton jokebook:

While the handful of moderates on the SBOE squeals in opposition, the conservative majority lands blow after blow, passing resolutions imposing its mythological history on the nation?s textbooks.

Cynthia Dunbar, a board member who has described public education as a ?subtly deceptive tool of perversion,? and who homeschooled her own children, emerges as a relentless ideologue. During the hearings, she yanks Thomas Jefferson from a standard according to which students are expected to ?explain the impact of Enlightenment ideas ? on political revolutions from 1750 to the present,? and replaces him with the 13th-century theologian St Thomas Aquinas. Moderate Republican board member Bob Craig points out that the curriculum writers clearly intended for the students to study Enlightenment ideas and Jefferson in this part of the standard, not a mix of Protestant and Catholic theologians, but the resolution passes anyway?

The board goes on to remove the word ?slavery? from the standards, replacing it with the more benign-seeming ?Atlantic triangular trade.? They insist on calling the United States a ?constitutional republic? rather than a ?democracy? ? largely because they want students to think of their country as Republican, not Democratic?

Historical figures of suspect religious views (like Jefferson, Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin) or political tendency (like union organizer Dolores Huerta) are ruthlessly demoted or purged altogether from the study program. Meanwhile, the board majority makes room for an eclectic array of ancillary figures from the revolutionary period, such as Charles Carroll and Jonathan Trumbull. What these marginal figures have in common, other than being dusted off from high shelves and promoted by the board, is the fact that they were loud defenders of orthodox Christianity.

And the students in Texas public schools are the ones who will be damaged by this propaganda.

Possible Plot Points (The Purge)

The Purge Has Begun

In the year 2039, the world discovers the existence of supernatural beings. In an effort to cleanse the world of this disease, at least that's what the humans call it, "The Purge" has begun. Which side will you fight for?

So here I'm just going to list a few things that could happen during the course of the RP, some things to keep in mind, etc. These are not things that have to happen, or things I want to control. These are things that you can choose to do with your characters, or not. I do want the direction of this RP to go the way ALL the players want it to. And feel free to add your own ideas if you have any. I'm going to keep a few tricks up my sleeve, after all every good RP needs a few surprises. :)
  • Dr. Quentin's daughter gets kidnapped either by the lycans or vampires, because they hear he's attempting to find a cure. Could mistake him for being someone like Dr. Lauren, instead of the man he actually is.
  • A human (no specific one) could be turned into a vampire or lycan through the course of the story.
  • A human could also know a vampire or lycan, having thought the person dead. Whether it be an old friend, and long lost relative, etc.
  • The vampires and lycans have a big fight before making peace. OR perhaps they make a truce, and it gets broken by a hot-headed vampire or lycan.
  • Keep in mind that vampires and lycans look and can act human before exposing their powers. This could have some interesting outcomes.
  • At the start of this RP is when the war is hitting it's peak. If you are out in the streets alone, you have a much higher chance of being captured or killed. Living a normal life isn't really an option anymore.
  • Deaths are going to happen. Humans have the weapons able to kill and incapacitate the other species. Vampires and lycans know each other's weaknesses, so they know the best way to destroy each other as well. (This is also another reason for having two characters, because you may have to part with one.)
  • I am totally okay with all the players having NPC's. If you're in the heat of battle, it's easy to know that you and the few other characters wouldn't be the only ones fighting. Feel free to describe what happens to others we players aren't controlling.
  • Romance is expected and encouraged. However, love is complicated, especially in the midst of a war. It would not be easy, especially should you fall in love with a different species. Make your love believable. After one night you wouldn't just be completely in love and ready to lay your life down for them at a moment's notice. And not all relationships work out in the end.

So those are some things that have been going through my mind. As I said, feel free to add your own. And I of course have some things I am keeping secret! :) If you have some idea, but you don't want it to be known by everyone, feel free to PM me, and I can add it to my secret list!!

'Metamaterials,' quantum dots show promise for new technologies

'Metamaterials,' quantum dots show promise for new technologies [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 24-May-2012

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Researchers are edging toward the creation of new optical technologies using "nanostructured metamaterials" capable of ultra-efficient transmission of light, with potential applications including advanced solar cells and quantum computing.

The metamaterial - layers of silver and titanium oxide and tiny components called quantum dots - dramatically changes the properties of light. The light becomes "hyperbolic," which increases the output of light from the quantum dots.

Such materials could find applications in solar cells, light emitting diodes and quantum information processing far more powerful than today's computers.

"Altering the topology of the surface by using metamaterials provides a fundamentally new route to manipulating light," said Evgenii Narimanov, a Purdue University associate professor of electrical and computer engineering.

Findings were detailed in a research paper published April 13 in the journal Science.

Such metamaterials could make it possible to use single photons ? the tiny particles that make up light ? for switching and routing in future computers. While using photons would dramatically speed up computers and telecommunications, conventional photonic devices cannot be miniaturized because the wavelength of light is too large to fit in tiny components needed for integrated circuits.

"For example, the wavelength used for telecommunications is 1.55 microns, which is about 1,000 times too large for today's microelectronics," Narimanov said.

Nanostructured metamaterials, however, could make it possible to reduce the size of photons and the wavelength of light, allowing the creation of new types of nanophotonic devices, he said.

The work was a collaboration of researchers from Queens and City Colleges of City University of New York (CUNY), Purdue University, and University of Alberta. The experimental study was led by the CUNY team, while the theoretical work was carried out at Purdue and Alberta.

The Science paper is authored by CUNY researchers Harish N.S. Krishnamoorthy, Vinod M. Menon and Ilona Kretzschmar; University of Alberta researcher Zubin Jacob; and Narimanov. Zubin is a former Purdue doctoral student who worked with Narimanov.

The approach could help researchers develop "quantum information systems" far more powerful than today's computers. Such quantum computers would take advantage of a phenomenon described by quantum theory called "entanglement." Instead of only the states of one and zero, there are many possible "entangled quantum states" in between.

?spread through the air? ? NOT! - New Prostate Cancer Infolink

Posted on by Sitemaster

How did we all miss this? This may be the single most important paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Urological Association this year!

According to a survey conducted by researchers at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York, and reported by Underwood et al. (and as discussed in an article on the MedPage Today web site:

One in six prostate cancer patients believed that cancer can be spread by air, and that belief may affect their treatment choices.

Furthermore,

Men who believed that air can spread cancer were more than three times as likely not to choose radical prostatectomy as a treatment option, compared with men who said cancer definitely cannot be spread by air.

In response to a a questionin the survey about the idea that air can spread cancer:

  • 154/158 patients answered the question.
  • 25/154 men (16.5 percent) agreed that air can indeed spread cancer.
  • 50/154 (32.7 percent) stated that they didn?t know.
  • Just over half (51 percent) stated that air definitely can not spread cancer.

We apparently need to be very clear about this ? There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that cancer can be spread through the air. Furthermore, there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that, at the time of surgery, when the surgeon ?opens? an incision to remove the prostate and any related cancerous tissue, that cancer can ?spread through the air? to other parts of the patient?s body.

In discussing these findings, Underwood stated that

If a patient is going to have surgery, he might ask, ?What are you going to do if the cancer has spread?? ? Physicians might think the patient is asking whether the cancer has spread to other sites in the body. In fact, the patient might be asking, ?What are you going to do when you open me up and the air hits the cancer and spreads it?? We think that?s what some patients are asking.
