Long Distance Relationship: Will It Survive College

Well high school love birds, I have some bad news for you.? If you and your sweetheart are off to your freshmen years of college this autumn, chances are this summer was the last you will spend as a couple.? I know, just thinking about your lover with someone else drives you nuts.?? But let the reality set in now, so it won?t be so painful later.? Even if you are going to the same college, the probability of staying together over the next four years are slim.? But going to schools in different states?? Forget it.? Long distance relationships do not survive, especially in the college years.

Try to put aside the feelings and history you have with your partner, and look at the situation from the outside.? Both of you are heading off to some of the craziest times in your lives, with parties and new experiences behind every door.? You will be meeting hundreds of new people, getting drunk and high all the time, and the one you have called boy/girlfriend over the past few years will be nowhere in sight.? Both of you will want to enjoy the experiences to the fullest.? Eventually one of you will cheat or fall for someone else, it is simply inevitable.? Sure, absence makes the heart grow fonder, but eventually it gets too lonely, and out of sight becomes out of mind.

I am not trying to minimize the importance of your high school relationship, not do I want to sound condescending in judging the sustainability of your loyalty.? In reality, I think if the relationship was your first love, there will always be a special place in your heart for that person.? Heck, you may even eventually end up with your high school sweetheart.? This is not a critique of how meaningful your relationship truly is to the both of you, but instead a realistic assessment of what happens to high school relationships once college begins.

Take my word, so that you don?t waste your entire first semester sitting at home worried about where your lover is.? Or just as bad, going out to parties but having to hold back out of guilt.? Let your boy or girlfriend go and be free, and when next summer comes around you can see if you still have that old chemistry. ? The advantage with that is you both will have had time to scope out the scene and see what else is out there, and neither of you will return all bitter about the opportunities you let get away.
