Stars come out for 'New Year's Eve'

After a quiet week last week, things are getting busy at the movies and on TV again this week.

If you saw last year's "Valentine's Day," you?know what to expect from?this month's "New Year's Eve." Tons of stars (Robert De Niro, Katherine Heigl, Ashton Kutcher, Ludacris, Jon Bon Jovi, etc.), Garry Marshall directing and a lot of holiday-themed love storylines. "Valentine's Day" topped the box office when it came out, we'll see if "NYE" can do the same. And then, sit back and await "Arbor Day," "Daylight Savings Time," "Labor Day Weekend" and other cinematic calendar offerings. (Opens Dec. 9.)

Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody's "Young Adult" is a darker film than "Juno," but?Cody's sparkling dialogue and eye for detail are still there. Charlize Theron plays Mavis Gary, a writer of young-adult lit who returns to her Minnesota hometown convinced she can win back her old beau (Patrick Wilson), even though he's a happily married dad. Patton Oswalt plays the chubby geek from their high-school class who forges a surprising friendship with Mavis as her dream doesn't quite turn out as she'd imagined. (Opens Dec. 9 in some cities, Dec. 16 everywhere.)

While we await the 2012 release of "Skyfall," the next James Bond movie, there are other spy films afoot. "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" is based on the 1974 John LeCarre bestseller, with Gary Oldman as LeCarre's famed spy, George Smiley. It may feel like a bit of a throwback -- the novel of course was set in the 1970s, so the Soviets are the enemy. We kind of miss those days, when it seemed like we had a reasonable nemesis, not random terrorists with dirty bombs.

TV
"The Biggest Loser" is one of TV's feel-good shows. It's hard not to be amazed at how the contestants transform as they drop weight -- sometimes a hundred pounds or more. This season divided contestants into teams by age, and it proved tough for the older folks to stick it out. See who won -- but really, on this show, everyone wins -- on the season finale on Dec. 13. (9 p.m. on NBC.)

"The Help" was a huge hit when it came out this summer, but if you missed it in theaters, now's your chance to buy or rent it for home viewing.?Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer shine as two African-American maids in Jackson, Miss., in the 1960s. Emma Stone plays the young white woman who puts their story into a book, and Bryce Dallas Howard is the racist society queen who gets a big comeuppance. The DVD also includes "In Their Own Words: A Tribute?To the Maids of Mississippi," which features real women talking about working as maids in the south. Director Tate Taylor's own childhood caretaker, Carol Lee, is one of the maids featured. (Out on DVD Dec. 6.)?
