It?s homecoming weekend for the Bob Jones Patriots; parade, football game and school dance. It?s what fall in high school is supposed to be like. What times I had in high school?if my mother ever knew?.
Enough of that, let?s talk college football.
Through just two weeks of the season we have been treated to incredible games with exciting finishes. Last weekend, the Georgia-South Carolina contest was a dandy. With the 45-42 score, that was the most combined points between the two schools in the history of the series. Matter of fact, since 2000, that match up is the most competitive of any SEC series with an average scoring difference of 8.25 points. Second in that department is the South Carolina-Tennessee battle.
Six players in the Auburn-Mississippi State game each had more than 100 all-purpose yards. I believe all of this just goes to show a good defense those teams don?t have.
This week?s lineup includes Thursday?s LSU-Miss State head knocker, (7 p.m., ESPN). On Saturday, Auburn-Clemson (11 a.m., Channel 31), Ole Miss-Vanderbilt (11:20 a.m., Channel 54), Tennessee-Florida (2:30 p.m., Channel 19), Navy-South Carolina (5 p.m., ESPN 2) and North Texas State-Alabama (6:30 p.m., FSN).
My predictions for the week are below.
To get you ahead for next week, TV games include Georgia-Ole Miss (11:30 a.m., Channel 54), Arkansas-Alabama (2:30 p.m., Channel 19) and Florida Atlantic-Auburn (6 p.m., FSN).
Missy The Missile
We?re still about a year away from the 2012 Summer Olympics to be held in London, but the buzz in American swimming is the girl her father dubbed her Missy The Missile when she was 12 years old. Missy Franklin is her name and medals is her game. The 16-year old is the youngest member of the U.S. Swim Team that competed at the World Swim Championships held this past summer in Shanghai. She won five medals in relays and individual events. She looks to be the next new star for the Americans.
High School Sports Nuts
Participation and attendance for high school sports continues to rise in our country. A survey showed more than 55-percent of high school students participate in sports. The top three sports for boys are: football, track & field and basketball. For girls: track and field, basketball and volleyball.
Meanwhile, there more sports nuts now then a year ago. The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) survey indicated more fans attend high school basketball and football events than ever before.
Combining girls and boys, basketball led the way with 170 million fans, followed by football with 166 million. The NFHA indicated, and I agree, ?A ticket to a high school sporting event remains one of the best values for the entertainment dollar.?
Huntsville Havoc Hockey
The Huntsville Havoc hockey team has announced its home schedule for the upcoming 2011-2012 season of action in the arena of the Von Braun Center. The schedule includes 11 Saturday night matches, eight Friday nights, seven Thursdays, one each Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Havoc home opener is Saturday, Oct. 29th. Ticket information is available at 256-518-6160 or visit the Havoc online at www.huntsvillehavoc.com.
Predictions
I was really disappointed I go beat on two games last week (Tennessee and Auburn), but this week I think I?ve finally got a handle on the choices in college football. I got LSU mopping up Miss. State, Auburn to defeat Clemson, Florida to knock off up starting Tennessee and Alabama to cruise over North Texas State.
Wish me luck!
